Lizzie O’Malley is recently returned to Boston after five years, and one failed relationship, in Oregon. She’s not exactly the most stable, responsible girl going around and, at age 23, is attempting to get her life back on track. On a night out with a friend, she encounters Irish transfer Teagan Gallagher and they hit it off immediately. He’s only around for the summer and a summer fling seems like just the thing Lizzie needs. But their summer together brings tragedy, challenges and changes that are going to change Lizzie forever.
Maybe it’s because the blurb doesn’t give much away or maybe it’s because I haven’t read a lot of “serious” romance novels, but Unsettled did not play out at all like I was expecting it to. It’s a bittersweet book. Until around the 75% mark, I had a lot of affection for one of the characters in particular, but with a big life change and decision, I was suddenly left feeling a little betrayed. I can’t say more without spoiling what happens, but this book touches on some fairly heavy topics. It’s well written, well handled and definitely thought provoking. Although this is just the first in the Chosen series, the ending does give enough closure to the story to feel full and right. I finished the book thinking that it was headed in the right direction, which is surprising because until I reached the epilogue I wasn’t convinced I wanted to keep reading, even though I couldn’t put it down. I wouldn’t recommend this book if you can’t handle a little emotion and upset with your romance. But if you’re game, it’s a must read. This is no picture perfect, happily ever after fairy tale. The characters don’t make all the right decisions. They don’t act or react like typical heroes and heroines, but Unsettled reads true, feels genuine and leaves you with a little smile while simultaneously leaving you wanting something…more. Like the second book.
This is not a standalone book, there is a small cliffhanger.
